Abstract
Background and Objectives : The majority of episodes of sudden hearing loss are often accompanied by vertigo. Presence of vertigo in sudden sensorineural hearing loss has been known to give negative effects on the hearing recovery. The purpose of this study is to analyze electronystagmographic findings in sudden sensorineu-ral hearing loss with vertigo, and to correlate them with the recovery of hearing loss.

Materials and Methods : The charts of 105 patients who were diagnosed as sudden sensorineural hearing loss and had complaint of vertigo were reviewed retrospectively. The patients were divided into three groups according to the presence of vertigo and types of ENG findings, and compared the type and severity of hearing loss and the level and frequency of hearing gain.

Results: The type and severity of hearing loss did not show significant difference between the groups. The frequencies of hearing gain in the patients with vertigo were significantly lower than without vertigo and which was worsened in the presence of canal paresis in electronystagmography.

Conclusion: Vertigo is a poor prognosis factor in sudden sensorineural hearing loss and the prognosis may be poorer with abnormal vestibular function.
